What's the point of all this?

White Flower

I'm not sure where the idea of lightning and daisies came from. I'm always scrolling through Pinterest or Tumblr and there are lots of quotes about women having stardust in their DNA and fire in their eyes. Daisies had been my favorite flower for quite a while at the point that I realized what I wanted this blog to be known for.

"With daisies on her breath and lightning in her veins, she {more than} conquered."

Romans 8:37 reassures us that "no, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."  To conquer is defined as the way in which we "overcome a problem or weakness," and that is exactly what Christ calls us to do.  It honestly goes beyond the fact that He calls us to overcome. Without Him, overcoming is absolutely impossible.  There are too many things out of our control, too many battles going on that are beyond our human comprehension.

Something that is dainty and delicate, and something that is capable of killing us are not usually grouped together.  But, sweet friend, that is exactly the point.

The fact that you exist is a wonder in and of itself. The fact that your heart beats without your instruction, the fact that you think and daydream and have passions are impossible feats.  All of your intricacies, your secrets, the things you would die for: they're for a reason.  And anyone who tells you different is wrong.

You deserve and are capable of strength, and beauty, and love, and protection, and wonder, and elegance -- and not one of them cancels another out.

The daisies in this mission statement are meant to encompass the parts of us that do adhere to preexisting ideas of what it means to be feminine: your favorite romcom (mine is Pretty in Pink), songs that bring tears to your eyes ("After Rain" by Dermot Kennedy), the outfit that makes you feel beautiful (my floral jumpsuit from American Eagle).

The lightning encompasses the parts of us that go beyond that: the deep yearnings of our souls that are too much to express in words, the surge of energy on those nights where you don't think you can do it anymore.  The I-can-feel-it-in-my-bones assurance that we have to be made for more than a 9-to-5 and a paycheck.

We desire to be warriors. All of us.  That's why we have such a molecular-level connection with female superheroes and other heroines.  And that's exactly who Christ has designed us to be, no matter the form in which that desire manifests itself.  Whether you need a hand to hold or a wake up call, I hope we can go on this electrifying and magnificent journey together.  Because, as C.S. Lewis puts it in the final chapter of The Last Battle, "the night has ended, and this is the morning."

Take a deep breath.  We are beautifully and irrevocably in over our heads.
